Why Server Rack Cleaning Is Critical for Data Centre Uptime

Server rack interiors are among the most dust-prone โ€” and most neglected โ€” areas in any data centre. Cooling fans continuously draw air through racks, pulling in contaminants that accumulate on circuit boards, heat sinks and power supplies. Over time this dust insulates components, restricts airflow and creates the conditions for overheating, short circuits and premature hardware failure.

CTS recommends server rack interior and exterior cleaning at minimum twice a year. Our ESD-safe, HEPA-filtered process eliminates accumulated contamination without any risk to live equipment โ€” maintaining ISO 14644 particle standards across your environment.

Server Rack Cleaning โ€” What We Do

Internal Server & Network Device Cleaning

CPUs and network devices rely on internal fans; baked-on dust on heatsinks, fan blades and motherboards reduces cooling efficiency and causes thermal throttling, crashes or failure. CTS internal device cleaning safely eliminates this:

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should server racks be cleaned in an Indian data centre?+

A minimum of twice per year for interior and exterior cleaning. Facilities with higher footfall, nearby construction or older raised floors may need quarterly cleaning. We assess your environment and recommend the right frequency.

Does rack cleaning require powering down servers?+

External rack cleaning can be done on powered-up equipment. Internal server cleaning typically needs individual devices powered down โ€” planned in advance around your change-management windows.

What particles are most dangerous inside server racks?+

Conductive dust (short circuits), deliquescent dust (absorbs humidity and becomes conductive) and zinc/tin whiskers from raised-floor pedestals. CTS addresses all of these, including specific zinc-whisker mitigation protocols.
